Karen Wimhurst is a freelance composer and clarinettist. She has been commissioned by festivals, ensembles and theatre companies throughout the UK. Recent works include the theatre piece ‘Get Up and Tie Your Fingers’ , Observatory (Norwich and Norfolk Festival) and ‘Freedom , Bread and Peace’, (multi media music theatre Bournemouth Festival 2015) and Miriam, a chamber opera for EVT exploring the life of entomologist Miriam Rothschild.
In the 1990’s she set up ‘the Cauld Blast Orchestra’ one of the first experimental groups to fuse jazz, classical and traditional musics. Since then she has worked across these traditions. She recently released the album Clarion with accordionist Paul Hutchinson (as Pagoda Project) which was featured in Songlines Top of the World CD 2016
She is a regular tutor with Distil and Halsway Manor.
